Happy Palindrome Day!
A palindrome is any number, phrase, word, etc. that has the same sequence going forward as it does in reverse.
Today, 02/02/2020 is the only Palindrome Day all century that works whether you’re using the Month/Day/Year (MM/DD/YYYY) format or the Day/Month/Year (DD/MM/YYYY) format. You can even put the year first if that’s your preferred format.
Either way, it reads the same forwards and backwards. This makes it a palindrome. Anyone can celebrate this palindrome and it got me thinking about the importance of inclusion. Everyone seems to be talking about inclusion, diversity, and equity these days – even this actuarial magazine article. With fun, numbers-based celebrations, we can support inclusive events without religious or political connotations. Doesn’t it feel nice to take a break from all the strife?
The next global, or world, Palindrome Day won’t happen until 12/12/2121. That’s more than a century away! I’m enjoying this one while it lasts, but with medical innovation, who knows: many of us just might live to see the next one.
When was the prior world Palindrome Day? Over 900 years ago on 11/11/1111.
Dazzle your math friends with another fun fact: it’s the 33rd day of 2020, and there are 333 days to go.
